I don’t want to drink on the weekends. I’ve got to be more active. I can’t eat cake tonight. I need to go to the gym. I’m going to get on the clean train. I’ll start Monday. Okay, I’ll start next Monday.
We’ve all been here, and if you haven’t you’re probably one of those people who crave chicken and broccoli [insert dirty look to fiancé here] and I want nothing to do with you. Just kidding, I’m marrying one of those guys. But if you’re like me, you crave the unhealthy things and making healthy eating choices is difficult. Sometimes it’s easier to just skip the gym than tie up your laces and get going. Making the healthier choice isn’t always easy and making those choices into habits is even more difficult.
One way to ease things up is to not do it alone. I can name plenty of things that are better together, but one that is at the top of the list is changing your body. The tough thing about changing your body (whether it’s losing body fat, gaining muscle, or getting healthier) is that it’s only you. You’re the one who does the work, you’re the one who improves, and if you don’t do it you’re only letting yourself down… and that’s a pretty easy thing to talk yourself out of. When you go at it with other people, you’re part of a team, and so when you slack you’re letting other people down. Unless you are a soulless robot, this usually takes more of a toll on us than when it’s only you who’s affected.
Your team can be one other person or it can be 300 other people. The fact is that a team can push you to accomplish things you couldn’t do by yourself. Meet your BFFL and Johnny to understand why.
You’re Being Held Accountable You and your BFFL are both trying to get to the gym more often. You have busy schedules and find it tough to get there after a long day, so you plan to go to the 5:30 AM class together. You set your alarms for the a$$ crack of dawn and promise to meet at the gym earlier than you’ve ever even been conscious. Your first alarm goes off at 4:30 and you slam snooze. Your next alarm goes off at 4:40 and you slam snooze. Your last alarm goes off at 4:50 and you raise your hand to smack that thing one last time, but you stop. You know BFFL is counting on you to get there so she doesn’t have to be alone in a room full of strangers, so what do you do? You get up, scrape the crust out of your eyes and put your spandex pants on like a champ. You’re not skipping out on this workout because you know she won’t let you hear the end of it if you do.
You’re Around Like-Minded People Johnny is a big dude and he wants to lean out a little bit so the definition of his muscles show through his button down work shirt. He’s been going to the gym every night after work and spends Sunday afternoons doing food prep. He cooks for a few hours and separates all his healthy goods into what seems like hundreds of Tupperware containers. This way he can eat healthy during his lunch break at the office. His co-workers are eating left over take-out while he pulls his ground turkey and Brussels sprouts out of the fridge. For the next 30 minutes, he’s being ridiculed for his healthy eating habits. That doesn’t make him want to eat his proteins and greens at work. But what happens when the office has a health promotion initiative to lose the most weight so they can win a 5-day cruise? Now they’re on a team working towards the same goal and everybody is going to Johnny for the best boiled chicken-breast recipe and Tupperware sales. All of sudden Johnny is Big Man On Campus and can comfortably eat healthy with his team.
You’re Motivated and Motivating You, BFFL and Johnny all joined your gym’s current transformation challenge. As luck would have it, you three are on the same team trying to shed the most body fat. You all workout together and you see BFFL working really hard in workouts, just killin’ it. All of a sudden you’re working a little harder in class too, if she can do it so can you. Now Johnny wants to keep up with the ladies, so he adds a couple extra pounds onto his barbell and kicks up his intensity. Once the two of you notice this, you start to move a little quicker now too. This is a never-ending cycle that will end in lots of sweat and amazing results.
With a team, you’re way less likely to skip the gym and head to the cake. I’m no scientist but I’m pretty sure that’s a fact. When everyone is working towards a common goal, like changing your body, more can happen than if you’re going at it alone. It’s no secret… teamwork makes the dream work!
