Waking up in the morning and going straight to the gym first thing may sound like an impossible task to achieve. You probably will think of multiple excuses before you even try to rationalize the idea. “I’m too tired in the morning”, “Getting up that early is so hard”, “ I can’t make breakfast and make it to the gym”. While it may be hard to get out of bed in the morning, once you are over that hurdle, committing to make it into the gym every day is easier in the morning than any other time. Plus, working out to start your day also has a lot of other benefits as well!
I will go ahead and say you are five times more likely to make it into the gym in the morning than any other time of the day and it won’t take long before you realize how true that may be. When you wake up first thing in the morning, you only have one factor working against you to make it into the gym, and that’s yourself. If you are able to get yourself up and going, there is nothing else stopping you. The longer the day goes on, the more factors start stacking up against you getting your workout in for the day. Throughout the day people may reach out for help doing things, you remember you have to go to the grocery store, you have to stay late at work, a colleague wants to grab a beer after leaving the office or maybe you are just too tired after a long day. This is just a short list but it could go on, as the day goes on the odds of getting to the gym slim down. You are in the most control of your day at the very beginning, if making it in the gym is top priority for you, make it happen first.
Okay Josh, you are making some sense here, but what about those other benefits you mentioned?
Bonus... More benefits! Everyone loves a bonus… here’s the extra you get with a morning workout:
First, since you have taken an initiative you getting into the gym first thing in the morning, you are more likely to be more consistent, being more consistent means getting better results.
Working out is fatiguing while we are doing it, when those sweet, sweet endorphins kick in, you can’t deny those happy feelings and boost of energy that comes after it. There’s no better way to continue your day than with happy hormones putting a little pep in your step.
Working out in the morning could give you an extra boost to your metabolism to keep you burning more calories all day long. Of course, this is different from person to person. But either way, you’re kicking your day off with some good energy expenditure.
Speaking of bedtime, since you started your day earlier with an intense workout, you won’t have any problems falling asleep and more importantly staying asleep for a good night's rest. Sometimes working out later in the day can keep you up longer. That’s fine if you’re a night owl, but if you’re an early bird getting to sleep sooner will do you good.
My most favorite bonus though, is that when you are done with your day, you don’t have to think “I still have to go to the gym”, because you already did that! So after a long day all you have to do is go home, cook some healthy food, and go to bed so you can do it all again!
